Creed’s New Call: SPOILER ALERT

There was no question that I would head to the movie theatres to see the highly anticipated film Creed 2. To witness the boxing match between Adonis Creed and Viktor Drago, son of Ivan Drago who infamously killed Apollo Creed (father of Adonis Creed) in the ring three decades ago sounds to be good to miss out on. To come face to face with the son of the man who killed your father is a battle within itself…but that was not the only thing Adonis had to come to terms with. In the film, Adonis and his girlfriend Bianca had to confront the uncertainty if their daughter would be born with a hearing-impairment that could possibly be passed on from her mother. Certainly, reminded myself of the challenges faced in my life with a mother who passed on her disability.

Not long after the newly engaged Adonis and Bianca went over to his mother Mary Anne’s for dinner, they discovered Bianca was pregnant. A freshly crowned boxing heavyweight champion and aspiring singer raising a baby in Los Angeles with such high demand careers sounds like a disaster with the amount of attention needed for a baby. It was beautiful to see that Adonis wasn’t as concerned as Bianca with her newborn possibility being born deaf. As a soon to be parent, you have to be prepared to raise your child as any other child that wasn’t born with a disability. Sympathy can destruct a child in the future because you are coddling he/she from the real world along with their sense of independence. For myself, born with a hereditary physical disability my parents never hid me from the world despite the obstacles to come. It’s scary because a parent wants to catch their child when they fall. Bianca understood the challenges because she grew up having a hearing impairment. Defiance pushed her through those obstacles and didn’t prevent her from signing a record deal with a music label or finding a man that loves her unconditionally

Rocky questions Adonis if he can handle that Amara may be deaf after completing an hearing test with defeating results. Adonis holds onto the hope that she will overcome her hearing impairment. Never be afraid for your child to have a disability, embrace the birth and move past it as it makes them unique. Adonis should prepare to find the same love in his daughter as her mother. The perseverance installed in Bianca as she didn’t let her disability stop from becoming a singer and being shy from the world is something to admire. Growing up, my mother taught me how to be independent with my disability. Overtime, I knew life would get rough because I would get weaker. The mind has to remain strong, it never steers wrong.

Hopefully, in Creed 3…the storyline continues around Bianca and her daughter Amara’s path of handing with her disability. In the first Creed, Adonis helped Rocky fight his battle with Cancer…now in return I know Rocky will do the same.
